Teething??? or Hand, Food and Mouth Disease (HFMD)???
Yesterday (8th Nov 09), the whole day Qin doesn’t want to drink milk and eat porridge..... This is the first time. What’s problem?? People said Qin may be due to teething, the emergence of the first teeth through a baby’s gums, can be a frustrating time for little ones.
Popo notice Qin’s first tooth pushing through the gum line…the first teeth seems like almost coming in at bottom front since last Thursday (5th Nov 09).
As planned, all of us including Qin will attending Gu Po’s birthday lunch. Due to Qin is not feeling well then Mummy and Qin stayed at home. At morning & noon time, Qin still doesn’t want to drink milk and eat porridge then Mummy feed Qin with steam bread…very small portion…so pity…..no appetite…
At morning, Mummy give Qin medicine to avoid fever as Qin temperature is 36.9°C. At late afternoon, Mummy checks again Qin’s body temperature. Result at low grade fever (37.7°C). Mummy gave Qin medicine again and temperature drop but not for long….Qin’s temperature slightly increase. This really has make parents worried. Then, bring Qin to visit doctor. Doctor Shan Chee told us, ulcers in Qin’s mouth, tongue, gums. It’s about hand, food and mouth disease (HFMD). No wonder Qin doesn’t want to drink milk…these ulcers can be very painful. When doctor check Qin’s mouth, Mummy can see the first teeth is almost appear at bottom front. Issit both these teething and HFMD coming together at same time….Alamak……these feeling of itching & discomfort of teething, suffering from fever and pain…Doctor said these ulcers can be painful and may last seven to 10days…So pity, really pity...…God, please help..…
Today, Qin is feeling better. Thanks to the Lord. After taking medicine, no fever & can eat some porridge & drink milk up to 4oz. Popo now suspend my toys for the time being. Frequently wash my hand to ensure the cleanliness.
Pray to God that Qin will not feeling painful & get well soon.

About hand, foot and mouth disease
Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) understandably has many parents worried. Here is what you need to know to prevent your child from contracting this highly contagious disease.
What is HFM disease?
Not to be confused with foot and mouth disease, a fatal condition known to affect livestock, HFM is basically a common viral infection caused by the Coxsackie virus A16, enterovirus EV 71 and other enteroviruses.
Hand, foot and mouth disease can cause ulcers in a child’s mouth, especially on the tongue, gums and inside of the cheeks. It often affects children under five years of age and since more than one virus can cause HFM disease, a child may get it more than once.
How does HFM disease spread?
The disease spreads through person-to-person contact with nose and throat discharges, saliva, fluid from blisters or the stool of a person with the infection.
It can also be transmitted through shared items such as toys and utensils. That’s why outbreaks frequently take place in childcare centres, nurseries and pre-schools as these places are packed with young children in close proximity and sharing various items. It may also spread from playgrounds and shopping malls.
Children with HFM disease are most contagious when they have mouth ulcers during the first week of the illness.
What are the symptoms of HFM disease?
The symptoms include:
Ulcers in a child’s mouth, especially on the tongue, gums and inside of the cheeks. These ulcers can be painful and may last seven to 10 days.
Blisters or rashes on the hands and feet, although they may appear on the trunk and other parts of the body as well. Unlike chickenpox, these rashes rarely itch.
Low grade fever (38° C to 39°C).
Though it may be life-threatening in a few cases, HFM disease is generally a self-limiting illness.
Presently, there is no specific treatment for it. Often, symptomatic treatments such as fluids, painkillers and fever relievers are used to ease a patient’s discomfort until the disease goes away on its own.
Prompt medical care is required if you suspect your child has been infected.
