But, Mummy said walker not good for baby, you know why?? Mummy read a article from magazine and advice from expert.....

Advice From Expert:-

Generally, more experts discourage putting baby in walker. Well, let’s see what are the advantages and disadvantages of baby walker. Also, what parents must pay attention to if they want their baby in the walker.

Advantages of baby walker:-

- It provides a good support and tool for babies to learn walking;

- It helps babies to overcome the fear when they learn walking;

- Babies have less chance to fall if they learn walking with walker, as compare to those who walk by holding on the home furniture or other objects;

- In some extent, walker ‘liberalizes’ parents from being tight down looking after the walking babies closely. The parents do not need to waste their time holding and guiding the babies to walk.

Disadvantages of baby walker:-

- Walker ties the babies down in a small compartment and limit their free movement of the whole body;

- Walker deprives the babies from learning walking naturally. Babies acquire walking skill after many times of falls and stand up by themselves. They must achieve good body muscle-skeletal coordination and balancing before they can walk independently. All this challenge helps them building up their courage and confidence which bring them a sense of proud. Their neuro-muscular development is more complete and better coordinated. All this, of course, cannot be done with a walker as the babies have no chance to learn balancing during walking;
- After putting babies in the walker, parents may feel a sense of ‘freedom’ and therefore may busy doing other house work. Babies would be left unattended and thus prone to encounter accident and have higher chance to touch dangerous objects surrounding them;

- Walker may retard the normal growth of the lower limbs’ bones if the baby has been put into a walker at younger age. This is because of the femur bones (thigh bones) are still soft at early infancy stage, under high speed sliding of the walker; both thighs have to press on the ground while supporting the body weight. This external forces will exert its impact on the femur bones and make it bend outwards to become ‘O’ shaped thighs;
- On high speed sliding of the walker, babies get over excitement without good body coordination. This may affect their neuro-sensory development.

If parents insist to put their baby into the walker, few points I would like to emphasize here:-

- It is best to put them in the walker after age of 10-month. Too early in the walker, baby may skip the crawling movement, which is a natural neuro-muscular development before walking, and thus result in poorer muscular-skeletal coordination and neuro-sensory imbalance. This in turn makes the growing child very clumsy, careless, poor concentration span, poor coordination in physical activities and may be having emotional problem too. Besides this, early walker sliding may cause the lower limbs bend into ‘O’ shape;

- To buy the walker which produced by reliable manufacturer. Carefully check the material, skeleton and height of the walker. Make sure the wheels are not too smooth; the lock for height adjustment is secure and safe; the toys attached at the front desk are children-friendly and not easily detached;

- Make sure the height of the walker is adjusted from time to time according to the baby’s height;

- Make sure the baby on the move in the walker is always within your eye sight;

- The place for the baby on walker must be safe. It must be free from slope and staircase. There should be no furniture or objects with sharp edges, no hot water, electrical items, power point, small objects that impose the risk of choking and so on. It must be totally child-proof environment;

- Make sure to inspect the walker intermittently to identify any defect and wear and tear which might impose danger to the baby.
